WebVerstehen is the German for "to understand" but has come to mean a particular form of deep, emphatic understanding. Introduced to sociology by Max Weber, the term refers to seeing the world as others see it, to the sort of rich valid data that might be acquired through participant observations or extensive unstructured interviews. WebTo deal with this problem, Weber and Wilhelm Dilthey introduced the concept of verstehen, a German word that means to understand in a deep way. In seeking verstehen, outside observers of a social world—an entire culture or a small setting—attempt to understand it from an insider’s point of view.
