You can't export animations directly, although you can still draw them and use another program to make them into a gif. Freebies are, indeed, a good way of practice. Webthe idea is to set the bg color (=transparency) to something else than white (either in the frame or layer settings), I usually use 50% gray for that. in the overall file -> properties you can change the bg color for the preview too. then you just erase by right clicking on the bg color and overpaint stuff you want to have erased with it.
