Foliation is usually formed by the preferred orientation of minerals within a rock. Usually, this is the result of some physical force and its effect on the growth of minerals. The planar fabric of a foliation typically forms at right angles to the maximum principal stress direction. In sheared zones, however, planar fabric within a rock may not be directly perpendicular to the principal stress direction due to rotation, mass transport, and shortening. WebOct 7, 2024 · There are three types of foliated rock: slate, schist, and gneiss. Types Of Foliation There are two types of foliation: penetrative and non-penetrative. Penetrative foliation is caused by the alignment of minerals within the rock, while non-penetrative foliation is caused by the alignment of minerals on the surface of the rock.
WebNov 8, 2024 · Foliated rock is a type of metamorphic rock that has distinct, repetitive layers. Sometimes these layers are very differently textured or colored. Sometimes the layers are only slightly... WebThe four foliation types with examples. Like all metamorphic rocks, foliated metamorphic rocks form from extreme pressures and temperatures acting on existing rocks. As pressures and temperatures increase, the degree of metamorphism increases correspondingly. The same original rock (the protolith) is therefore able to end up as several types of ...
